Live Saxophone at Grace River Island Resort

Cocktail hour on the river, played live. I am on the resort’s preferred vendor list.

There is a stretch of about forty-five minutes at Grace River Island when your guests have just watched you get married, the photographer has taken the two of you away, and everyone else is standing on the patio with a drink looking at the Caloosahatchee.

That is the part of the day nobody plans. It is also the part live saxophone was made for.

The night before counts too. The couple I played for here had me the evening before as well, for their welcome party. I do that a few times a year, and Grace River Island is set up for exactly it — rehearsal, welcome party, wedding and a day-after gathering, none of it requiring anyone to get in a car.

You do not have to book the whole day either. Cocktail hour on its own is $1,000, and plenty of couples start there and add to it once they have seen the timeline take shape.

Mike Peterson, who owns the island with his wife Karen, was there the afternoon I played. I am on their preferred vendor list.

What I know about the island

Where I set up

The patio. The ceremony happens at the far end facing the water, so where you stand depends on which part of the day you are covering — but either way there is parking close enough that load-in is straightforward, and plenty of power where you need it.

How the sound behaves

It travels across the open area on its own, and that matters more than it sounds. Outdoors beside water you usually get one of two problems: you push the volume until people are shouting over it, or you lose the music entirely into the open air. Here it sits exactly right. Guests get the music and can still hear each other talk, which is the whole job at a cocktail hour.

The light

We were there on a February afternoon and it was Florida sunshine doing precisely what people move here for. Bright, warm, easy. That kind of afternoon does half the work before anyone plays a note.
